The course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.
Reinforced concrete stands as the primary cornerstone of the construction industry. Most undergraduate courses in reinforced concrete design focus on essential but basic structural elements, including the ultimate limit state design of conventional beams, one-way and two-way slabs, and short columns in buildings, as well as the fundamental understanding of the serviceability limit states related to deflection and cracking. However, the undergraduate civil engineering curricula do not cover many practical but very useful designs of typical reinforced concrete structural elements. This CPD series of courses on reinforced concrete design is organized to fill the gap between academia and industry, providing practicing engineers with in-depth knowledge in the day-to-day design of reinforced concrete.
The design of reinforced concrete half-joints (dapped-end beams) in bridges and buildings presents unique challenges due to their distinct structural behavior and complex stress distribution. This course explains the load transfer mechanisms, stress distributions, and critical regions associated with half-joint configurations, highlighting common modes of failure and their implications for safe design. The design principles and detailing requirements for half-joints are presented in detail, supported by practical design examples that are analyzed and discussed using both code-based methods and the strut-and-tie model (STM) approach.
Course Outline:
Structural behavior and failure modes of RC half-joints (dapped-end beams)
