The half-day CPD course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.
Dissemination of experience is extremely important for the healthy development of the engineering profession. Therefore, a series of "Lessons Learnt" Web-CPD courses is launched so as to disseminate the experience we gained in some past construction projects in Hong Kong and mainland China. The course covers the lessons learned from large-scale underground construction projects.
Large-scale underground construction works are often necessary to accommodate the rapid development of Hong Kong. These works may include the construction of large-scale substructures such as MTR stations, deep basements, caverns and tunnels. The complexity of the project is significantly increased by the scale of the work. Handling and effective management of a site of an area of 1,000 m2 is completely different from that of 100,000 m2. In some cases, even the land formation or slope cutting works are being carried out simultaneously within the same site when a deep excavation is in operation.
Many engineers may be familiar with the concepts and design of the final large-scale subsurface works. However, there are many important practical considerations for the successful completion of large-scale underground construction, particularly the construction sequence and the logistical support behind it. These practical considerations are often overlooked in the design office. However, they would make significant differences in the planning and execution of such projects from the engineer's and the contractor's viewpoints. More importantly, proper consideration of these practical aspects is a crucial factor in determining the success of these projects in terms of quality, time, and cost.
There are many site-specific constraints that must be addressed and site-specific problems that need to be solved when they are identified during construction. These site-specific constraints and problems may include geotechnical conditions, topographical conditions, the site's shape and location, and the existence of nearby sensitive structures, underground utilities, and/or receptors.
In this half-day Web-CPD course, the practical considerations in large-scale underground construction will be presented with real-life examples.
Course Outline:
Common construction methods for deep underground structures, including the top-down technique
Common methods for stabilization of temporary excavations, with depth to 50+ m
Logistical support for the construction, including the provision of access for works and disposal of large amounts of excavated spoil
Dewatering and waterproofing of underground structures
Illustration of such work practices from representative mega projects in Hong Kong & mainland China
