Reinforced Concrete Design VIII: Transition from HKConcrete2013 to Eurocode 2
(10th July 2024)
The full-day course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.
Reinforced concrete stands as the primary cornerstone of the construction industry. Most undergraduate courses on reinforced concrete design focus on essential but basic reinforced concrete structural elements, including the ultimate limit state design of conventional beams, one-way and two-way slabs, and short columns in buildings, and the fundamental understanding of the serviceability limit states concerning deflection and cracking. However, many practical but useful designs of common reinforced concrete structural elements are not covered in the undergraduate civil engineering curricula. This CPD series of 10 courses in reinforced concrete design is organised to fulfil the gap between academia and industry to provide practicing engineers with an in-depth knowledge in the day-to-day design of reinforced concrete.
Eurocode 2 has been adopted by the United Kingdom, EU countries, Singapore, Malaysia, among many others, for the design of reinforced concrete for more than a decade. The adoption of Eurocodes for the design of civil engineering structures was promulgated by the Development Bureau of the Government of the HKSAR Government to be mandatory in 2015. Therefore, thorough understanding of the concepts of Eurocode 2 is extremely important for engineers designing reinforced concrete structures in Hong Kong and worldwide.
Reinforced concrete is the major material for construction industry in Hong Kong and thus the corresponding effect of adopting Eurocodes would be significant. EN 1992 Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures (EC2) is the code of practice for concrete design. This one-day Web-CPD course aims at providing practising engineers with the theory and basis of structural concrete design to EC2. The background of EC2, and general design concepts of the ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state for reinforced concrete buildings and members are introduced. In addition, differences between EC2 and HKConcrete2013 are discussed to provide a smooth transition for Hong Kong practicing engineers from HKConcrete2013 to EC2.
Course Outline:
Background of Eurocodes
Guiding principles of design to Eurocode 2
Design for flexure
Design for shear and punching shear
Axial load plus uniaxial and biaxial bending
Durability and concrete cover requirements
Bond and anchorage, laps in reinforcement
Comparison of EC2 with HKConcrete2013
