Reinforced Concrete Design VII: Deep Beams
14th May 2024
The course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.
Reinforced concrete stands as the primary cornerstone of the construction industry. Most undergraduate courses on reinforced concrete design focus on essential but basic reinforced concrete structural elements, including the ultimate limit state design of conventional beams, one-way and two-way slabs, and short columns in buildings, and the fundamental understanding of the serviceability limit states concerning deflection and cracking. However, many practical but useful designs of common reinforced concrete structural elements are not covered in the undergraduate civil engineering curricula. This CPD series of 10 courses in reinforced concrete design is organized to fulfill the gap between academia and industry to provide practicing engineers with an in-depth knowledge in the day-to-day design of reinforced concrete.
Designing and analysing RC deep beams, commonly found in structures such as transfer girders, structural walls and certain types of foundations, can be challenging due to their unique structural behaviour and complex stress distribution. This half-day Web-CPD course is tailored to present and elucidate the fundamental behaviour, technical background, and design procedures for RC deep beams. Worked examples, employing both traditional and strut-and-tie methods, are presented to illustrate the detailed design process for the deep beams.
Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of the Strut-and-Tie Model of analysis. You may consider to enrol the Web-CPD course "RC Design VI: Theory and Applications of Strut-and-Tie Models for Structural Concrete Design" to be held on 17th April 2024.
