Reinforced Concrete Design IV: Shear Walls and Coupled Shear Walls

(1st March 2024)

The course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.

Reinforced concrete stands as the primary cornerstone of the construction industry. Most undergraduate courses on reinforced concrete design focus on essential but basic reinforced concrete structural elements, including the ultimate limit state design of conventional beams, one-way and two-way slabs, and short columns in buildings, and the fundamental understanding of the serviceability limit states concerning deflection and cracking. However, many practical but useful designs of common reinforced concrete structural elements are not covered in the undergraduate civil engineering curricula. This CPD series of 10 courses in reinforced concrete design is organized to fulfill the gap between academia and industry to provide practicing engineers with an in-depth knowledge in the day-to-day design of reinforced concrete.

This half-day Web-CPD course is focused at the design and analysis of shear walls and coupled shear walls. The fundamental behavior and technical background for the design of shear walls, coupled shear wall systems and coupling beams are presented and discussed. Worked examples are provided to illustrate how to conduct the designs of these reinforced concrete structural elements in detail.
