There is no doubt that our climate is changing and extreme weather events are becoming more severe.  Moreover, extreme weather events will occur more frequent in many countries. In the first half of September 2023, Hong Kong is one of the eight places in the world that have experienced major flooding. Over 150 mm of rain fell within 24 hours on 8 September and caused flood damage to buildings, including shopping malls, MTR stations, etc.

This is a wake-up call for the Hong Kong construction industry. There is an urgent need to reduce the risk of flooding in the built environment.
