Lessons Learnt from Tunnel Construction

in Hong Kong

(26th August 2022)

The full-day CPD course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.

Dissemination of experience is extremely important for the healthy development of the engineering profession. Therefore, a series of "Lessons Learnt" Web-CPD courses is launched so as to disseminate experience we gained in some past construction projects in Hong Kong and mainland China. The 3rd course is on lessons learnt from construction of different types of tunnels, focusing on case histories in Hong Kong.

Very few tunnels were constructed in Hong Kong prior to 1990s. However, there have been many tunnel construction projects since 1997 due to the expansion of more than 8 MTR lines as well as the highway network. This full-day Web-CPD course is thus intended to give an overview of tunnel construction methods and the lessons learnt from some of these Hong Kong tunnel construction projects.

The construction of tunnels is often much more complicated other than most engineers envisage. The geotechnical concerns of the works are only one of the factors. The design use of the tunnel, location of the tunnel, neighboring environment of the site, site layout, construction logistics, etc. may be more important factors, especially from the prospective of the contractor. Of course, the economics of the construction works are an important factor.

In this full-day Web-CPD course, the practical considerations in tunnel construction will be presented with real-life examples. Lessons learnt from various projects will be used as illustrations. These projects include: (1) tunnels of the West Rail; (2) tunnels of the MTR since 2000s, including the Express Rail Link; (3) tunnels of Route 8; (4) the Central-Wanchai Bypass tunnel; and (5) the new Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel.
