Lessons Learnt from Railway Construction

in Hong Kong

I - 25th November 2022 (afternoon half-day)

II - 2nd December 2022 (full-day)

These two complementary CPD course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.

Dissemination of experience is extremely important for the healthy development of the engineering profession. Therefore, a series of "Lessons Learnt" Web-CPD courses is launched so as to disseminate experience we gained in some past construction projects in Hong Kong and mainland China. The 5th course is on "Lessons learnt from railway construction in Hong Kong".

There have been several major railway projects being constructed in Hong Kong since the 1990s, including including the Airport Express / Tung Chung Line, West Rail, Tseung Kwan O Line, Ma On Shan Line, Extension from Hung Hom Station to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station, Kowloon Southern Link (extension from Nam Cheong Station to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station), Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, Disneyland Resort Line, South Island Line, West Island Line, High Speed Rail, Shatin to Central Link etc. Moreover, there are several enhancement projects to improve the operational effectiveness of the existing network, such as the Quarry Bay Congestion Relief project, Kwun Tong Line Extension and the re-routing of railway routes.

The extensive scale of construction in these railway projects may be beyond the imagination of the general public or even engineers who do not have experience in such infrastructure works. For example, these projects often include large-scale site formation, slope cutting and filling, tunneling, deep underground work in extremely congested site environment, working in environmentally sensitive zones, or even reclamation and marine works in some cases.

In these two Web-CPD courses, the construction details and technical concerns of selected Hong Kong railway projects will be presented as real-life examples. The speaker will make use of his past studies on these projects and many of the photographs in his personal collection to illustrate to the audience what has been carried out in this interesting area of construction.
