Compaction: From Theory to Construction Practice

(18th February 2022)

This 1-day Web-CPD course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.

Compaction is one of the oldest, the most effective, the most economical and the most practiced earthwork construction and ground improvement techniques for centuries. Compaction can be broadly categorized as: (1) shallow compaction; and (2) deep compaction, depending on the depth of soil to be compacted. It is often a major item in many contracts of infrastructure construction, as there are numerous applications of compaction in construction. From shallow compaction to deep compaction, compaction has been used extensively for backfilling of temporary excavations for the construction of foundations, pits and utility trenches, underground structures, earth-retaining structures, cut-and-cover tunnels etc.; construction of granular filters; construction of soil-cement structures; construction of sub-base and bituminous materials for carriageways; construction of fill slopes and retaining walls; stabilization of existing slopes; to compaction of reclamation fill. The depth of compaction varies in different applications, ranging from less than a meter to several tens of meters. Improper compaction can cause significant problems afterwards.

However, many geotechnical practitioners are still confused by the relationship between the geotechnical engineering properties of compacted soil and the state of compaction. In fact, many fail to identify the key parameters controlling the geotechnical engineering properties of the compacted soil. Inappropriate site practices and/or contractual provisions have been leading to unnecessary conflicts on site and even unnecessary construction disputes and claims.

This one-day Web-CPD course is developed to cover the fundamental concepts of compaction, design of compaction, different techniques and applications of compaction, laboratory and field evaluations of the state of compaction of soil, and the contractual aspects of soil compaction. Topics include:

    • Background of compaction;

    • Theory of compaction;

    • Laboratory determination of engineering properties of compacted soil;

    • Design of compaction;

    • Materials used for compaction;

    • Compaction equipment;

    • Applications of compaction;

    • Specifications of compaction;

    • Field evaluation of compacted soil;
