Good practice in gas hazard evaluation and risk assessment and how to apply these to particular situations. Assessing the degree of risk posed by methane and other gases from the ground is a key step in the feasibility appraisal of new developments and of remedial works for existing ones. This publication proposes a methodology for gas hazard evaluation and risk assessment for a wide range of construction situations and ground gases, particularly for methane and carbon dioxide. Starting from a qualitative screening that leads on to a quantitative procedure, it enables the user to make a rational comparison of risks, in particular with those of natural gas supply mains. Key words: ground investigation and characterisation, risk and value management.
