Hong Kong's city fabric was quite primitive in the 1950s when the population was approximately 2.2 million, representing a dramatic increase from the post-World II population of about 600,000. Hong Kong's infrastructure has grown significantly due to rapid population growth driven by the massive influx of immigrants, several fatal natural disasters, and the rise of Hong Kong's light industry.
New sites have been formed to accommodate private and public residential buildings, constructed to ease the housing problems of the rapidly growing population. New schools, hospitals, and community centers have been constructed. Industrial buildings were constructed to cope with the rapid rise of the light industry. Satellite cities were developed in those then-remote locations in Hong Kong, where people could live and work. Rapid developments in banking services, financial networks, and commercial transactions drive demand for office space, spurring the construction of commercial buildings. All these developments require a more efficient transportation system. New highways, railways, tunnels, and terminals serving passengers and containers have been constructed.
The MTR system was initiated in the 1970s. Then came the 1980s, 1990s, Hong Kong's return to China, and the millennium. The pace of infrastructure development in Hong Kong is skyrocketing, such as the Hong Kong International Airport (Chek Lap Kok), the Tsing Ma Bridge, the Airport Core Programme (also known as the Rose Garden Project), the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the Hong Kong Express Rail Link, the Three Runway System, the West Kowloon Cultural District, Shenzhen Bay Bridge, the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel, the Liantang/Hsung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point, Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link, etc. Hong Kong is being transformed into one of the most modern and prosperous cities in the world.
In this half-day Web-CPD course, the speaker will summarize what has been developed over the past 70 years that made Hong Kong a city so promising and efficient for both its residents and businesses. He will also take the opportunity to review the advances in construction technologies in Hong Kong throughout the period.

Projects before and during the 1990s, including the Airport Core Programme
Projects since the millennium
Overview of the recent transportation infrastructure projects, including port works
Overview of the land formation projects, including reclamation and site formation
Overview of the recent environmental upgrading and urban regeneration projects
