Modelling and Support Design of Rock Excavations

(24th June 2024)

The half-day CPD course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.

With the continuing demand for usable land to accommodate infrastructures in highly urbanized places such as Hong Kong, the need for sub-terranean solutions such as use of underground openings in rock including tunnels and caverns is evident. However, there are many engineering issues in the design and construction of underground openings in jointed rock masses such as the magnitudes and directions of the in-situ stresses, orientations of discontinuities, etc. These factors play an important role in the optimization of the designs of tunnels and caverns in rock and the stability of underground excavation. The impact of these engineering parameters on the design and construction of underground openings will be elaborated in this half-day CPD course.

The development of numerical model for the stability analysis of excavation in jointed rock mass, and the design of rock reinforcement for rock excavations will be presented in this half-day CPD course.
