The half-day CPD course will be delivered on the web using Zoom.
Slope works are often required for land formation in Hong Kong's hilly terrain. These works may include the formation of new cut slopes and fill slopes, as well as the stabilization of existing slopes. The situation is complicated in land formation projects, as building works are often commenced before all slope engineering works are completed. The project's complexity is significantly increased by the scale of the work. Handling and effective management of a site of an area of 1,000 m2 is completely different from that of 100,000 m2. Similarly, working on slopes of heights of 5 m and 50 m are two different stories. Construction in congested urban environments further complicates the site logistics.
Many engineers may be familiar with the concepts and design of slope and site formation works. However, there are many important practical considerations for the successful construction of slope and site formation works, particularly when building works are often underway simultaneously to meet deadlines. These practical considerations are often overlooked in the design office. However, they would make significant differences in the planning and execution of such projects from both the engineer's and the contractor's viewpoints. More importantly, proper consideration of these practical aspects is a decisive factor in the success of these projects in terms of quality, time, and cost. There are many site-specific constraints that must be addressed, and site-specific problems that need to be solved, as they are identified during the construction process. These site-specific constraints and problems may include geotechnical and topographical conditions, as well as the site's shape and location.
In this half-day Web-CPD course, practical considerations in the construction of slope and site formation works will be presented using real-life examples.
