Reinforced concrete stands as the primary cornerstone of the construction industry. Most undergraduate courses in reinforced concrete design focus on essential but basic structural elements, including the ultimate limit state design of conventional beams, one-way and two-way slabs, and short columns in buildings, as well as the fundamental understanding of the serviceability limit states related to deflection and cracking. However, the undergraduate civil engineering curricula do not cover many practical but very useful designs of typical reinforced concrete structural elements. This CPD series of courses on reinforced concrete design is organized to fill the gap between academia and industry, providing practicing engineers with in-depth knowledge in the day-to-day design of reinforced concrete.
Designing and analysing RC deep beams, commonly found in structures such as transfer girders, structural walls and specialised foundation systems, present unique design challenges due to their distinct structural behaviour and highly complex internal stress fields. This half-day Web-CPD course provides a clear and practical introduction to the fundamental behaviour, technical principles and detailed design procedures for RC deep beams. The course covers both conventional design approaches and the strut-and-tie model, with worked examples provided to illustrate the detailed design process.
