Practical Design Applications of Strut-and-Tie Model

Strut-and-tie models (STM) is a structural idealization and can be a powerful tool for analysis, design and detailing of structural concrete members subjected to shear, moment, axial force, or combinations of these and other actions. EC2 includes STM, allowing and encouraging its more widespread use; but there is little simple guidance within the Code or indeed elsewhere. This half-day Web-CPD course is Part 2 of Strut-and-Tie Model and aims at demonstrating the use of STM in the design of buildings and bridges. The contents include the theory of STM and failure criteria are reviewed. The development and applications of STM for some popular structural concrete members in buildings and bridges ae presented.

    • Review of theory of strut-and-tie models and failure criteria

    • Discontinuous stress fields and corresponding STMs

    • Applications in design of structural concrete
