Groundwater Flow and Seepage: Geotechnical Applications - March 29, 2018

A thorough understanding of groundwater flow and seepage phenomena is essential for the proper analysis and design of many geotechnical infrastructures. Moreover, the hydraulic conductivity is most variable parameter in geotechnical engineering, rendering its measurement difficult to perform. To determine whether you should take this CPD course on groundwater flow and seepage, you may attempt to answer these questions:

  • Do you fully understand Darcy's law?

  • Do you know how to measure hydraulic conductivity?

  • Do you understand the concept of hydraulic gradient and do you know how to determine this groundwater parameter from field measurements?

  • Do you understand the concepts of flow net and can you apply the concepts in your geotechnical engineering designs?

  • Do you know the difference between the phreatic surface and piezometric surface?

  • Do you know the difference between a standpipe and a piezometer?

  • Do you understand the phenomena of piping and heaving and do you know how analyze these phenomena?

  • Do you know the pitfalls of using computer programs in seepage analyses?

  • Do you know how to apply the concept of seepage in slope stability analyses, design of excavation and lateral support, and methods of groundwater and seepage control?

The goals of conducting this CPD course are for the participants to: (a) understand the importance of seepage to geotechnical engineering issues; (b) understand the fundamental principles of groundwater flow; and (c) perform analyses on seepage related geotechnical engineering problems.

These topics will be covered in this CPD course: (1) some fundamental concepts in groundwater and seepage for applications in geotechnical engineering; (2) Darcy's law; (3) uses and measurement of the hydraulic conductivity parameter; (4) groundwater monitoring; (5) determination of hydraulic gradient from field data; (6) groundwater flow analysis; (7) seepage force; and (8) applications including slope stability analyses, design of excavation and lateral support systems, method of groundwater flow and seepage control.
