Use of CHAM's PHOENICS/FLAIR Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Software - April 16-18, 2018

The course and workshop will introduce delegates to PHOENICS' interactive graphical environment for the simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer processes. The topics covered during the course will focus on modelling both internal and external flows occurring in the built environment.

The course and workshop will cover aspects such as HVAC, thermal comfort, fire/smoke/pollution hazards, urban flow modelling and heat islands.

Participants do not require any prior experience in CFD simulation, and will gain the opportunity to both view and use the software during the hands-on workshop sessions, as well as benefit from the post-course familiarisation via a fully-supported licence of the PHOENICS/Flair & Flair-EFS software valid from the time of registration to 30th June 2018.

The course contents will be of interest to both prospective and current users of PHOENICS. The programme will be based upon the latest 2018 release of PHOENICS and highlight some of its newer features relevant to the PHOENICS/Flair module, including:

  • New turbulence models, including Realisable, SST, etc.
  • Scalable wall functions
  • Lawson criteria for wind comfort
  • Improved rain model
  • Air Exchange Effectiveness for rooms
  • Average velocity on horizontal planes in rooms
  • Age of air for individual rooms
  • New rapid auto-mesh grid generation
  • Direct selection of double-precision solver from VRE/Options/Run Version menu
  • Highlight of multi-run parametrisation feature
  • Labelling of contour lines in Viewer
  • Drift-Flux Model (DFM) for particle deposition & transport
  • Upgrade of S-PARSOL to eliminate spurious 'beams' of solid arising from imperfect CAD geometry
  • Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) Comfort Index
  • Inclusion of Belgian / Dutch / FRS fire models
